The Horizon Europe PERUN Project Kicks Off

The Horizon Europe PERUN Project Kicks Off

On 1 October, the project Protecting Sensitive Cyber Ecosystems from Upcoming Next Generation and AI-generated Malware Threats, or PERUN for short, officially started under the framework of Horizon Europe, Europe’s major funding programme for research and innovation. PERUN aims to deliver a European response to next-generation security threats by enhancing the continent’s cyber resilience, with a particular focus on defending critical digital infrastructure against sophisticated, AI-driven attacks.

The PERUN consortium unites 17 partners—including technology providers and end-user organisations—representing leading research institutions, universities, industry leaders, and non-profit organisations from eight European countries: Belgium, France, Germany, Italy, Poland, Romania, Spain, and Switzerland. Together, the partners will develop advanced AI- and ML-powered solutions aimed at protecting national-level cybersecurity infrastructures, research and education networks, critical energy infrastructures, NGOs responsible for delivering essential services, and security operation centres, to name just a few.

The pilots have been selected to address key challenges including AI-driven malware, stegomalware, encrypted communications, as well as cyberattacks on a large scale; all the while ensuring compliance in terms of ethics, privacy and relevant regulations.

The FernUniversität in Hagen, Germany leads the PERUN consortium. The project is coordinated by Professor Michał Choraś. The PERUN Kick-Off meeting will take place in Warsaw on 27-28 October. The project is funded by the EU with up to about 5.5 m€ over a runtime of three years.
